Between the ages of 15-25 a young man becomes a warrior through a special initiation. These age groups of men form the warrior class. Through the act of circumcision a young man becomes a warrior. The date for circumcision is determined by the boy’s father. There are, however, certain dates for the circumcision that only take place every 5-8 years. The young men who are circumcised in this time frame form a warrior generation. Men of a certain circumcision generation have a very intense relationship to each other and feel bound together by their common experience. Despite their status as warriors, these men also have responsibilities in the community. In earlier times the warriors defended the grasslands against invading tribes or departed to steal cattle and women from other tribes. Today their most important job is the boma and protecting the cattle on the open range from wild animals.
